A graphite-moderated pulsed spallation ultra-cold neutron source

چکیده
Proposals exist and efforts are under way to construct pulsed spallation ultra-cold neutron (UCN) sources at accelerator laboratories around the world. At the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), Switzerland, and at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), U.S.A., it is planned to use solid deuterium (SD2) for the UCN production from cold neutrons. The philosophies about how the cold neutrons are obtained are quite different, though. The present proposal describes a third approach which applies a temperature optimized graphite moderator in combination with the SD2 and qualitatively combines advantages of the different schemes. The scheme described here allows to build a powerful UCN source. Assuming a pulsed 2mA, 590MeV proton beam with an average current of 10μA one obtains UCN densities in excess of 2000 cm−3, UCN fluxes of about 106 cm−2 s−1, and total numbers of UCN in excess of 2× 109 every 800 s.

The Spallation Target for the Ultra Cold Neutron Source Ucn
A source of ultra cold neutrons, based on the spallation process is under construction at PSI. With the help of a fast kicker the whole ~1 MW proton beam (590 MeV, 2 mA) from the accelerator will be switched onto the UCN spallation target for approximately 8 seconds every 15 minutes. The spallation neutrons are thermalized in a large heavywater moderator at room temperature and further cooled i...

The fraction of delayed neutrons in a moderated beam from the enriched uranium, pulsed spallation source at the intense pulsed neutron source at Argonne National Laboratory has been measured and found to be 0.0283 for 450-MeV protons. Delayed neutrons produce a sample-dependent background in time-of-flight instruments . Because of the distribution of neutron wavelengths in the prompt pulse, the...
متن کاملNeutronic Design and Measured Performance of the Low Energy Neutron Source (LENS) Target Moderator Reflector Assembly
The Low Energy Neutron Source (LENS) is an accelerator-based pulsed cold neutron facility under construction at the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility (IUCF). The idea behind LENS is to produce pulsed cold neutron beams starting with ∼MeV neutrons from (p,n) reactions in Be which are moderated to meV energies and extracted from a small solid angle for use in neutron instruments which can ope...
متن کاملGEANT4 Simulations of the ISIS Muon Target at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory
MuSR science requires the availabilty of intense beams of polarised positive muons. At the ISIS pulsed muon facility at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory the muons are generated from a low Z thin slab graphite target inserted in the proton beam. We report on the use of the Monte Carlo simulation code Geant4 in simulations of the performance of the current muon target. The results are benchmarked a...

A new model is presented herein to calculate optimal value for ultra-cold neutron (UCN) production rate of a UCN source. The cold neutron (CN) converter is the main component of UCN source. In this paper, we study the UCN source which contains the D2O neutron moderator, the sD2 converter, 590 Mev proton beam, and the spallation target (a mixture of Pb, D2O and Zr). In order to determine the qua...
